How to Choose Your Glass

Interested in learning about what to look for in vinyl windows and vinyl window glass? The Window and Door Shop, Inc. is happy to help you. When shopping for windows it’s important to know at least a thing or two before your narrow down your options. Glass can often be as important as the window frames, depending on where you live.

Every homeowner should be in the pursuit of windows that offer exceptional glass and great ratings. After all, you want strong durable glass that won’t budge when harsh storms come your way and won’t buckle from extra-strong ultra-violet rays.

It’s helpful to know that some windows have a double layer of glass, this is called double-pane. Sometimes windows come with even three layers of glass, these windows are known as triple-plane. Triple-pane glass is made with gas and works as an insulator, and as a result, has great insulating properties. If the glass and frame is correctly constructed, no condensation should occur between the panes. However, a desiccant may be used between the panes to add protection from any condensation.

The U-Value or U-Factor of windows indicates the rate that heat flows through the window and frame and measures overall energy efficiency. A lower U-value means the window will insulate better.

Low-emissivity glass has a special coating that lets light in, but reflects heat that contacts it. On cold days, it can keep most of the inside heat from leaving through the glass, which keeps your home nice and comfortable during more of the extreme seasons. Low-E glass also reduces the amount of ultra-violet (UV) light that enters from your home, helping protect furniture, carpets and upholstery from fading.

While other windows can work wonders for your home, vinyl windows happen to be the best windows on the market and the best energy efficient windows. Vinyl windows have great ratings and offer low emissivity so you can get the most for your money. These windows work hard to keep the heat inside your home during the winter while keeping the cool air inside your home during the summer. This turns into money savings as constantly adjusting your thermostat will increase your already high energy bills.

Vinyl windows are also great at blocking ultra-violet rays and helping reduce outside noises that may disturb you at night.
